Periodontal maintenance requires you to visit our office at regular intervals – typically once every three months, though more frequent visits may be recommended if necessary. Maintenance appointments include thorough cleanings above and below the gum line to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria so that your gum disease stays under control and does not worsen or return. We provide periodontal maintenance at three-month intervals due to the fact that when biofilm and plaque are not removed from your teeth, the disease-causing bacteria in your mouth will begin to flourish within three to 12 weeks. By providing a thorough cleaning at the 12-week mark, our periodontist can remove these bacteria and keep your gum disease under control, preventing damage to your teeth and supporting structures.
